Kiva Blog Updates

It has been a devastating week for the Philippines. After Typhoon Ondoy (Tropical Storm Ketsana) caused devastating floods earlier this week, the area is now being threatened by Typhoon Parma.

Kiva is sharing messages from our Field Partners in the affected areas as we receive them. Today we received a message from Alalay sa Kaunlaran, Inc. (ASKI), who have many clients affected by the floods. At this stage we do not have details on the number of Kiva clients affected (all Kiva Field Partners work with clients funded by Kiva as well as clients funded by other sources.)

Just last week Agnes Chu was at the Kiva HQ office in San Francisco, training to become a Kiva Fellow. After graduating from the training program, she prepared to begin her fellowship in Samoa, working with Kiva Fellow South Pacific Business Development (SPBD). The day before she flew to Samoa, a tsunami devastated the area she was flying to.

Yesterday we received an update from SPBD on the situation they are experiencing. Today Agnes posted the first blog of her fellowship, to Kiva Stories from the Field, sharing the unexpected experience of her first days in Samoa:

As Kiva approaches its fourth birthday (coming up on October 12!), Matt Flannery, CEO and Co-Founder, shares his thoughts on where we've come from, where we are today, and what we're looking for in Kiva's future:

What's In A Number?

Ultimately Kiva is about stories and the connections between... Continue Reading >>

"Ms. Lien Thị Doãn is only 28 years old, yet she still manages to look younger than her age. She has a 13 year old son and a 5 year old daughter, kind eyes and she smiles frequently. As the breadwinner for her family (her husband is not well), she works every day - weather permitting - making coal blocks.

The coal blocks Ms. Lien creates are called “Than”, which are often used in homes and restaurants to heat large pots of food. The Nam Ngan district where Ms. Lien lives is well known for coal production. The work requires plenty of sunshine so the weather directly affects her... Continue Reading >>

We've created an online survey so you can vote for the day you think we'll hit $100 million in total loans. To place your vote, just... Continue Reading >>
