By empowering individual citizens to make loans as small as $5 to local small business owners, where banks are saying no to small business loan... Continue Reading >>

Today, we released a few changes to the navigation on the Kiva website. We're really excited about these changes and we hope they'll help make it easier for lenders and new visitors to move around the site. While some of the differences are fairly subtle, we wanted to walk you through each of the changes and share a bit of context for these updates.

The biggest change is the addition of “Zip”, with an eye catching “New” label. As Kiva grows, we are challenging ourselves to find new ways to reach even more people with innovative loan products. One way we've been doing this is... Continue Reading >>

The month of June evokes many things -- summer, graduations, beaches.

But this June evokes much more.

June is one especially inspirational Kiva Zip borrower who has experienced more than her fair share of hardships in her life.

The twelfth of 17 children, she was born to poor, uneducated parents who couldn't provide basic love and affection for each other and their own children.

June never really knew her father, and when she was just 13, her mother disappeared with five of her younger siblings,... Continue Reading >>

On Tuesday night, the City of Oakland approved the proposal that would make them the first U.S. city to become a Kiva Zip trustee!

Kiva Zip is a pilot program within Kiva that uses mobile and electronic payment technology to enable direct, zero-interest loans between lenders and borrowers -- helping us reach more types of borrowers than ever before!

In the Zip model, “trustees” have taken the place of field partners. Trustees endorse borrowers based on their character and business plans, recommending them as good candidates for Zip loans... Continue Reading >>

This is a guest post from Kiva Zip Director Jonny Price.

What's next?

I’m a huge West Wing fan, and one of my favorite quotes from President Jed Bartlett is that whenever his team achieves a tremendous success – broker a peace deal in the Middle East, or resolve a dispute between trade unions and their employers, for example – the President asks “what’s next?” I think it’s a great way to approach life.

Well we haven’t brokered any peace deals recently, but we are... Continue Reading >>
