Thank you for making this an incredible first year for Kiva U, Kiva’s student and teacher program!

When Citi and Kiva launched the Kiva U initiative in September of 2013, we had no idea what to expect. We hoped that if we created and shared useful and compelling content and resources, we could help students and teachers learn about poverty, microfinance, entrepreneurship and sustainability. We hoped that if we built platforms and ways for passionate and informed people to connect, we could build a movement that could transform lives for entrepreneurs working...

The Kiva community is filled with changemakers with inspiring stories to tell. We were able to catch up with one such enthusiastic and accomplished young student, who has put her passion for microfinance into practice through the club she leads at her school in Teterboro, New Jersey.

Sam, currently a senior at Bergen Tech High School, was an attendee at the Kiva U Summit this past fall in San Francisco. Like many, she left energized to find creative way to use microfinance to help others around the world, and is already walking the talk....

This is a guest blog post written by Dave Smith, 7th Grade Social Studies Teacher, Garden Spot Middle School, New Holland, PA.

In January of 2009 the “One Million Dollar Team” on Kiva.org was formed to show 7th grade Social Studies students that there is a world outside of their classroom in New Holland, PA. I set a goal of loaning $1,000,000 to entrepreneurs all over the world before I retire. The hope is to show my students that even they, at 12 and 13 years old, can change the world and make a huge difference towards ending world poverty....

In 2008, Dave Smith was seeking a project for his seventh-grade students that would demonstrate the value of “paying it forward.” He first discovered Kiva when he was invited by a friend and it turned out to be exactly what he was looking for – an actionable way to teach students about global development. So Dave put forth a challenge to his school and local community in New Holland, PA: raise one million dollars for Kiva borrowers. The social studies classes would be using microfinance and Kiva U as a vehicle for learning about other cultures and geography. Now in its 6th year, the...

Since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991, the people of Somaliland have been rebuilding their country and restoring hope within their communities. Kiva is excited to support students and recent graduates as they carve out new opportunities within their country through our new partnership with Kaaba Microfinance Institution (K-MFI)!

Founded in 1998, K-MFI is a brilliant microfinance institution that aims to help Somaliland flourish by supporting and empowering the country’s most vulnerable and most underserved groups. Fadumo Alin initiated the project... Continue Reading >>

This weekend, we're thrilled to welcome more than 150 college and high school student leaders and educators from around the world to the first-ever Kiva U Summit in San Francisco!

Over the next four days, this incredible group will learn about a range of issues and how to take action to expand financial inclusion and alleviate poverty. Rahul Pandit is going into his junior year at Harvard College, studying economics. Among his many accomplishments, he serves as an instrumental member of the Kiva U Advisory Board.

Rahul first discovered microfinance in high school during a family trip to India. While there, his family had the opportunity to visit a rural village where he saw firsthand the disconnect between those who have access to capital and those who don’t. Rahul came back from the trip eager to share his experiences with his peers. He and his friends got...

Today, we couldn't be more excited to announce a brand new initiative called Kiva U

It's not just a program. It's a movement. Everywhere, thousands of students and educators are joining together to change the world through microfinance. Already, we've seen teachers, high school clubs, campus chapters, and inspired students mobilizing to solve the world's toughest challenges. All of this has motivated us to take the next step and create tools for people to learn more about global poverty, economics, credit, and how small loans... Continue Reading >>

Our partner Strathmore University in Kenya just posted a huge batch of new loans to help students from all over Africa afford college tuition!

We're so excited to be working with Strathmore -- one of the most prestigious private institutions on the continent -- to get young people the funding they need to succeed. Make a student loan today, and change a life in dramatic ways.

It may be summer vacation, but too many bright, qualified students in Africa need to worry about affording education. Financial aid is... Continue Reading >>

Young people everywhere are taking action to celebrate the Month of Microfinance this April, but one group of students and teachers from Overlake School in Seattle actually made the trek to spend the week with us at Kiva Headquarters in San Francisco. These impressive young students took part in a ‘Design Thinking’ exercise to help develop some of Kiva’s future projects and initiatives.

Design thinking is a strategy for creative brainstorming that encourages participants to ideate, innovate, and continue looping back until a real... Continue Reading >>

April recently became known as the Month of Microfinance (MoMF). But what does that actually mean?

For us at Kiva, Month of Microfinance is both a great partner organization and an activist movement that engages people in lending for change. Both were inspired by a growing, active, empowered community exploring the potential of microfinance to end poverty and transform lives around the world.

Kiva is excited to partner with MoMF again this year and encourage our incredible, impassioned community to participate in April 2013! There are a number of ways to get your... Continue Reading >>

There's nothing we at Kiva love more than kids and students getting involved with microfinance and making a difference early in their lives.

On a mission to help people help themselves, students at the University of Pennsylvania established their own organization dedicated to microfinance 7 years ago. Today, they are the largest undergraduate microfinance organization in the United States and the host of the first and largest undergraduate microfinance conference, which is coming up on March 30.

Saloni is a sophomore at the University of... Continue Reading >>

Strathmore University is one of the leading private universities in Kenya. And in January of 2012, it became Kiva’s first university partner -- allowing lenders to make loans to low-income students for tuition and other supplies. Securing tuition fees is a major challenge for many Strathmore students, and every year, about a third of accepted applicants are unable to enroll because they don't have the money. We're proud to be changing this picture one loan at a time.

Last week, Strathmore held its 9th Annual Career Fair. Altogether, 31 organizations from... Continue Reading >>
