“I think Kiva is a great group, and I’ve never felt like I’m done with it. I received a Kiva Volunteer tote bag some time ago and when I take it to the supermarket, people will strike up conversations with me about Kiva. They are always so positive and will say things like, “I’m really glad you volunteer for them.” It’s also great when you tell people about Kiva who don’t know what it is – it doesn’t happen often in San Francisco – and... This is a guest blog post by Kiva Zip Borrower Alan Haight.

My wife and I farm in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. We've worked with California FarmLink for the past two years to get financial counseling and to obtain small annual operating loans to cover production costs. Last year, we discussed obtaining a FarmLink capital loan, and FarmLink sponsored us to obtain that loan from Kiva Zip.

Since 2006, BJS has been working to promote the holistic development of underserved communities in West Bengal by empowering the women at the center of these... Continue Reading >>

This year, we want to take the opportunity to celebrate the connections our lenders are making with borrowers around the world. So we asked our community one simple question: “What made you connect with a borrower on Kiva?” We received an amazing number of responses filled with truly heartwarming and inspiring stories.

We’ve featured two of these stories every day this week, concluding with...

When asked to point to Suriname on a map, many people would be hard pressed to find it. The small country located at the top of South America is home to just over half a million people -- smaller than the population of San Francisco. And its economy is almost entirely dependent on the mining of bauxite -- a main source of aluminum. Only about 25% of the population is engaged in agricultural activities, and the economic disparity between rural and urban regions is distinct.

Given all these conditions, many farmers in Suriname find themselves scraping by at the subsistence level.... Continue Reading >>

Honey: that delicious sticky, sweet treat you see on supermarket shelves. It comes from somewhere. And, thanks to one of Kiva's field partners, Honey Care Africa, honey producers in Kenya are now getting fairly compensated for the honey they help make by raising bees.

As of right now, there are 11 loans posted for entrepreneurs looking to make extra money by purchasing beehives for honey production. But when you raise bees with Honey Care, you get much more than the hives, you get the technical and market support to build a viable business... Continue Reading >>

In June, we launched a program called WLIFT with our field partner Relief International in Iraq and the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women. We had one goal: To help women business owners in the country get the funding they need to grow their businesses and incomes -- and hire more people in their communities.

Small businesses are at the heart of healthy economic growth. And this is especially true in Iraq right now. What really inspires us, however, is just how truly phenomenal the women posted as Kiva borrowers through Relief International are. Just... Continue Reading >>

While the Internet makes Kiva’s work possible by connecting borrowers and lenders around the world, unfortunately it is also a popular tool for scammers to reach a broad audience.
