It may be hard to believe (we’re still in shock!) but we just hosted our twenty-eighth class of Kiva Fellows here at our headquarters in San Francisco. Before embarking on their 4 month fellowships, fellows join us in SF for a week of action-packed training. Kiva knows that people around the world endeavor to help each other and this class exemplifies that with 30 fellows from 12 different countries joining together to volunteer with Kiva in 10 countries and 7 cities across the US.

This post was contributed by Keiley Gaston, a Kiva lender and intern at Kiva Field Partner Accion East.

I carefully choose the filters for the Kiva loan I am about to make: Female, check. Underfunded areas, start-ups, green, vulnerable groups. Check, check, check, check. Groups or individuals? I’ll check both. I scroll through the hundreds of matched borrowers Kiva presents to me. I am drawn to those who seem innovative, hardworking, and have children they are trying to send to school. When three friends and I started a microfinance club in our town in 2010, we made a... Continue Reading >>

Tariq was just 17 when his life was changed forever in a violent car crash. He was paralyzed in the accident, lost the use of his legs and had to relearn how to do everyday tasks. Following the accident, Tariq had a new perspective on life.

“The accident changed my life. I had to overcome a lot of obstacles. I had to learn to even eat,” he said. “I had a whole new take on life and people.”

So in 2012, he started the Mangum Foundation that focuses on outreach programs for youth, disabled veterans and homeless people. The foundation’s programs include a self-... Continue Reading >>
