We're so thrilled to be bringing Kiva to Newark, N.J.! Starting today, we'll be offering loans to hard-working entrepreneurs in the Newark area through Kiva Zip!

Zip is Kiva's pilot project to reach new types of borrowers in the U.S. and Kenya. Through Zip, anyone can endorse a deserving borrower to qualify for and raise a 0% interest loan on Kiva. These loans are made directly via mobile money and electronic payment systems, and borrowers and lenders can correspond during the term of the loan.

When you make a loan in Newark, you make so many great... Continue Reading >>

Today, we released a few changes to the navigation on the Kiva website. We're really excited about these changes and we hope they'll help make it easier for lenders and new visitors to move around the site. While some of the differences are fairly subtle, we wanted to walk you through each of the changes and share a bit of context for these updates.

The biggest change is the addition of “Zip”, with an eye catching “New” label. As Kiva grows, we are challenging ourselves to find new ways to reach even more people with innovative loan products. One way we've been doing this is... Continue Reading >>

This is a guest post by Kimberly Davies, Program Officer, Financial Services at the Grameen Foundation.

Many industries view similar or related organizations as competitors. I’d like to think that the international development industry is unique in viewing others as collaborators. Since everyone in this industry is working toward a common goal -- poverty alleviation -- everyone is constantly looking for ways to share findings and learn from each other. Our biggest concern is reaching a common, hugely important mission. Since this desire outreaches any... Continue Reading >>

While microfinance has become a powerful tool to fight poverty around the world, it leaves out a critical category of businesses that have the potential to create jobs and breakout growth in developing economies: Small and medium enterprises (SMEs for short).

One country where this is especially true is Iraq. Still in the early stages of recovery from the war, the country needs SMEs to build a strong foundation for healthy economic growth. At the same time, cultural restrictions and domestic norms in Iraq have vastly reduced the number of career... Continue Reading >>

We’re excited to announce our new partnership with Kopernik in Indonesia!

When we talk about the best ways to alleviate poverty in developing countries, we often bring up issues around education, clean energy, healthcare, savings and more. But poverty can also be tackled by establishing large-scale distribution networks to connect technology suppliers with users in remote areas. This is exactly why we partnered with Kopernik!

Like in many developing countries, small kiosks are very popular in Indonesia and account for 85% of the Indonesian... Continue Reading >>

This spring, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative announced its goal to eradicate polio by 2018. National governments and global foundations immediately pledged millions of dollars to fund the program’s community health initiatives in the few countries (Nigeria, Pakistan, India) where endemic polio remains. Initially, the disease was supposed to have been eradicated by 1990, but despite a massive influx of resources from the WHO, Gates Foundation and UNICEF, campaign fatigue and lingering pockets of wild polio in hard-to-reach areas have allowed it to simmer on.

We are excited to have a guest post from David Bakke -- a Kiva Contributor from the blog Money Crashers Personal Finance. He lives with his young son in Atlanta, Georgia, and writes about money management and saving tips on Money Crashers.

It's an unfortunate fact that our public school system does little to teach children about money and finances -- and that's unlikely to change any time soon. Therefore, as a parent, that responsibility lies with you and you alone.

Teaching your children about money at an early age is a priceless gift, as... Continue Reading >>

Did you know that 80% of the loans posted to Kiva are for women borrowers?

At Kiva, we believe research is an essential part of the design process. Talking with lenders, watching them use a feature we’ve built, and analyzing data from the website are all invaluable tools which help us identify what works well and where improvements can be made.

Nearly every project we undertake can benefit from user research. This can be as simple as analyzing patterns in Google Analytics, testing a new design with a paper prototype, or releasing a feature to a small percentage of users and seeing what happens. Because we may ask you to participate in a study, or... Continue Reading >>

Some yogurts pack more punch than just fruit at the bottom. While most of us wouldn’t typically think of yogurt as a tool to fight social injustice, add in a few extra nutrients and it becomes a formidable tool in the fight against malnutrition.

Grameen Danone Foods is a company that was specifically set up to tackle malnutrition by selling nutrient-fortified... Continue Reading >>

Did you know that in Chile, only 40% of the eligible student population is able to access higher education -- compared to 80% in developed countries?
