I had some time this weekend and decided to play around with the new Kiva API. Check out the result:

http://www.frazao.org/kivacloud

This little toy pulls a random sampling of loans from Kiva. Then it reads through each business description to find the most common words. The more often a word is used, the larger it appears in the cloud. It's an interesting way of looking at the dataset - it turns out Kiva is all about the children!!

You can also click on a word to see the loans that mention that word. Personally, my favorite view is the one that shows all... Continue Reading >>

Rico Munoz is the Partner Development Specialist for Asia, and I managed to catch a quick conversation with him before he left to return to the Philippines tonight.

It's always great to have the international staff in the Kiva HQ office, but for now we'll have to rely again on Skype and email to stay in touch!

And if you're in San Francisco tonight, don't forget to check out Ripple, the Kiva fundraiser hosted by Philanthro Productions! Continue Reading >>

Over the coming months something I'm going to be working towards is giving the Kiva community better insight into who does what at Kiva, and who the Kiva staff are, via short videos to be posted on the Kiva blog.

The last two weeks at Kiva HQ in San Francisco have been "black out" weeks which means that all Kiva staff are required to be working from Kiva HQ in San Francisco, which includes all of our staff located internationally. This ensures that we all get two weeks of face-to-face time, several times a year, to ensure that the organization is running smoothly in unison,... Continue Reading >>

Today the entire team gathered into the Kiva conference room to watch Kiva's Chief Technology Officer, Sam Mankiewicz, press the magic button to release Kiva website feature "PA2" unto the internet!

If you don't know what PA2 is, check out Roma's blog posting of October 23, which in fact is just the tip of the iceberg.

PA2 is a major feature which our engineering team has been working on for many months. The general theme is to enable greater detail regarding loan transactions to be stored in the Kiva system, allowing greater transparency - one of our key goals... Continue Reading >>

We know that many Kiva Lenders have been using Kiva as a teaching tool in the classroom, as a student activity on college campuses, and as a way to give back as guided by their faith. So, last week we added some new pages to share examples of using Kiva in these ways, and to share some materials that others have created and welcome you to use.

Just click on our Do More link and you'll now find Kiva in the Classroom, Kiva on Campus and Kiva and Your Faith. These are places where you can learn about ways in which others are using Kiva as an educational tool or group activity in... Continue Reading >>

"CGAP is announcing that 33 of the world’s largest microfinance investors have signed on to the Client Protection Principles, a microfinance industry-wide initiative that encourages providers to ensure that low-income clients are treated fairly and protected from potentially harmful financial products. The Principles are distilled from the path-breaking work of microfinance institutions, international networks and national microfinance associations to develop pro... Continue Reading >>

If you’re a follower of Matt’s blog at all, what we’re doing today is old news to you:
http://www.socialedge.org/blogs/kiva-chronicles/archive/2008/08/26/liquidity-and-community

He’s explained what we’re doing far better than I ever could. To summarize what’s going on over the next couple days, we’re rolling out two new features which we think are good news for the Kiva website and for lenders:

1) Partial repayments

Until now, lenders had to wait until their loan completed its entire term before receiving one repayment that represented all of the money... Continue Reading >>

I wanted to provide a sizzling hot preview of a feature coming soon to the Kiva website!

This fall, Kiva will be launching a new feature that allows Kiva users to create or join lending teams. Each lending team - company, school, religious organization, family, etc - will have a page on the Kiva website that will track and summarize the lending activity of all individual lenders associated with that team.

The way Kiva works is not changing. You will still make loans as an individual. Now you will have the added option of teaming up with likeminded lenders, inviting... Continue Reading >>

There are so many cool things to be done with the Kiva website. When we get around to doing them, with all the backend/site-maintenance/money-transferring tasks that typically take higher precedence, it's an extremely gratifying experience. A few weeks ago, Jeremy expressed this when he posted about the maps feature he built in his spare time.

Now Noah, Kiva's newest engineering hire, has gone in and extended the maps functionality to work on lender pages. This has been one of our most commonly requested features, so to see this come to life is definitely exciting.

Being an engineer is a strange job. We spend most of our time working on things that we can't even begin to explain to 99% of the people we meet. I'm convinced that for the first six years of my career my Mom thought I was a typist.

Since I've been at Kiva, all that has changed. Now when people ask me what I do I tell them I build Kiva, and thanks to our one-woman wrecking crew of a PR Department that's usually enough. As an engineer, to think that every day over 16,000 people all over the world are seeing my work is incredibly gratifying. As a normal human being (distinct... Continue Reading >>

We're rolling out a release that the Kiva team is very excited about this week, and we hope it will excite you, too. I'll list the highlights:

  • Blended Payments: Lenders can now pay using a combination of their Kiva Credit and a PayPal transaction. In the past, you could only really use one or the other (so if your transaction amount exceeded your Kiva Credit, you couldn't really use your Kiva Credit). That's fixed now. While fixing it, we made some changes to clean up the overall checkout flow.

  • We made some changes to our "Pay the Rent" page during the...
