Ever wondered what it’s like to be a Kiva Fellow? What sites do they see, what do they eat, and what is it like where they are? Kiva’s 24th class of fellows departed for their different locations around the world back in May of this year, and for many their time in the field has recently come to a close. Here are some of our favorite moments from the field to give you a taste of what these fellows have been up to:

Kiva Fellow Ayse Sabuncu stood at a landmark beauty, Victoria Falls, or Mosi-oa-Tunya in the local dialect of Tonga, meaning “ the smoke that...

I have seen many beautiful things this week; amazing sunsets, cute children, delicious food but when I went to visit a group of villagers last week it was their 'gratitude' and sense of community that struck me as beautiful. It was something I 'felt'.

They had already been part of a successful dairy cow initiative and had been chosen for the new pig program between my field partner SSLLP, supported by Kiva.

It’s been a whirlwind week here in the office as we welcomed our 24th class of Kiva Fellows to HQ. They converged from eight countries for five days of intensive training with our staff before they head out to work directly with our field partners later next week.

Kiva relies on the efforts of tremendous volunteers, including our fellows, to ensure our lenders’ capital gets to the people who need it to improve their business, families and communities.

During their fellowship, Kiva Fellows help set up and...

International Volunteer Day couldn't come at a better time in the Kiva office. Last week, we passed a major milestone with over $500 million dollars lent to borrowers around the world. And this never could have happened without the hard work and dedication of our incredible volunteers that work behind the scenes.

“The contributions of volunteers are vital to Kiva's success whether they contribute in our office, with our partners abroad, or working remotely,” said Kiva Fellows Program Director Jacob Schultz. “Simply put: without their effort...

This post was authored by both Jen Terry and Emily Mertens, incredible interns with the Kiva Fellows Program.

There's a spark that runs through the office during the Kiva Fellows Program training week. You can’t help but feel it when you walk through the door. Last week was no different when the 22nd class of Kiva Fellows (KF22) came to San Francisco to learn all things Kiva and prepare for their challenging assignments. They brought with them (and left behind) a lasting enthusiasm for this impactful work before scattering to 25 different countries on 5... Continue Reading >>

As you may or may not know, the Kiva Fellows Program offers between 15 and 40 extraordinary individuals the opportunity to support global microfinance around the world for four months.

During this time, Kiva fellows serve as our eyes and ears on the ground. They work closely with our partners to support their operations, improve the Kiva lending experience, and help us reach more borrowers. They're truly on the frontier of Kiva, helping to innovate, expand, develop and deepen our connections to the field.

Preparing them for their challenging roles is a team... Continue Reading >>

With our 20th class of fellows currently in the field, the Kiva Fellows Program is well into reviewing applications for the next wave (dubbed KF21).

This next class happens to fall during the summer, giving graduate students the opportunity to gain invaluable field experience during their summer breaks. While the typical Kiva Fellow spends 16 weeks in the field, we also offer a small number of shorter-term fellowships during our summer class to accommodate these students. No doubt this has contributed to the all-time high in applications received -- up 36% from last class, and up... Continue Reading >>
