The Kiva staff celebrating a decade of impact outside Kiva's headquarters in San Francisco.

In October of 2005, Kiva was founded as a nonprofit and an incredible journey began. Ten years later, Kiva has grown into a global force for good and a place where acts of mutual respect, kindness and faith occur every hour of every day.

The Specific Union for Farmer Women (SUFW)

Who are they?
The Specific Union for Farmer Women is a non-governmental organization established to raise awareness of the social issues facing rural women in Jordan. They target rural parts of Jordan, offering training programs as well as loan products to foster financial independence and education. They offer both education and business loans.

Providing loans in the Palestinian Territories is clearly very challenging. The people who live there face both high levels of poverty and scarce employment opportunities. Given this environment, we at Kiva are pleased to work with responsible and effective partners to deliver loans in both the West Bank and Gaza.

Today, we work with two of the most impactful microfinance institutions in the region, and Kiva lenders have made over $5 million in loans to more than 2,800 borrowers with their help. Noman (pictured below) is one of them who was able to improve his livelihood.

When we think about impact at Kiva, the first thing that comes to mind is the effect loans have on borrowers’ lives. From a shopkeeper in Rwanda paying back her loan successfully to a farmer in Nicaragua putting his kids through school, it’s clear that Kiva loans are changing lives each and every day.

Of course none of this would be possible without our 170+ field partners around the world. So when it comes to reaching even more borrowers with the right loans and services, we also need to enable change at the partner level. How do we plan to do this?

Brought together in July 2009 by a shared desire to fund loans that are in danger of expiring, the Late Loaning Lenders (LLL) team has grown into one of the most supportive and impactful communities on Kiva.

A little background: Kiva loan requests are posted for a maximum of 30 days. If they're not funded within that timeframe, the loan expires and the Field Partner does not receive the funds for that particular loan. The majority of loans on Kiva are pre-disbursed by the Field Partner to the borrower, so an expiring loan does not necessarily mean... Continue Reading >>
