Thank you for making this an incredible first year for Kiva U, Kiva’s student and teacher program!

When Citi and Kiva launched the Kiva U initiative in September of 2013, we had no idea what to expect. We hoped that if we created and shared useful and compelling content and resources, we could help students and teachers learn about poverty, microfinance, entrepreneurship and sustainability. We hoped that if we built platforms and ways for passionate and informed people to connect, we could build a movement that could transform lives for entrepreneurs working...

As part of a new blog series, we’ll be taking a look at the United Nations’ Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) and examine how Kiva loans contribute to addressing these targets.

This week, we’ll investigate the importance of education and the role it plays in gender empowerment. Why is education important and how does it really impact extreme poverty? How does Kiva challenge inequality in academic opportunity, and what can lenders do to help foster this development?

We're excited to have the following post from Will Sutton -- a Kiva Contributor. Will is a father, entrepreneur, and writer who discusses topics related to personal finance and business.

Kids should learn the fundamentals of finance from a young age, and since schools generally do little to that end, the responsibility falls mostly on parents. Showing children the importance of saving money, the dangers of credit card debt, and the benefits of effectively managing their finances are all essential elements of parenting. In...

In 2008, Dave Smith was seeking a project for his seventh-grade students that would demonstrate the value of “paying it forward.” He first discovered Kiva when he was invited by a friend and it turned out to be exactly what he was looking for – an actionable way to teach students about global development. So Dave put forth a challenge to his school and local community in New Holland, PA: raise one million dollars for Kiva borrowers. The social studies classes would be using microfinance and Kiva U as a vehicle for learning about other cultures and geography. Now in its 6th year, the...

Working in Pakistan’s fractured school systems, Kashf Foundation -- one of our innovative new field partners -- is working with Kiva to reform and repair the country's dilapidated schools. Recognizing education's pivotal role in poverty alleviation, Kashf -- which means 'self disovery' -- has set out to improve schools, decrease illiteracy, and improve the lives of students and communities.

Through Kashf, Kiva lenders can make loans directly to schools and support initiatives to reform administrations, curricula and infrastructure. Overall, these loans will help improve the... Continue Reading >>

Rahul first discovered microfinance in high school during a family trip to India. While there, his family had the opportunity to visit a rural village where he saw firsthand the disconnect between those who have access to capital and those who don’t. Rahul came back from the trip eager to share his experiences with his peers. He and his friends got...

Kiva just launched a new partnership with the Abaarso School of Science and Technology in Somaliland! Through this partnership, Kiva lenders will be able to make loans to help students afford quality secondary education!

Somaliland is an incredibly poor region of Somalia. The education system is weak, school fees are high, and many bright students never have the opportunity to learn. In this challenging environment, Abaarso is determined to make change. Named for the small village where it is located, the school is built on donated loand and has traditionally... We’re thrilled to welcome Lumni as our new Field Partner in Chile!

Did you know that in Chile, only 40% of the eligible student population is able to access higher education -- compared to 80% in developed countries? One of the main barriers to education is the limited access to financing. The loan requirements for education may include collateral, high interest payments or inconvenient repayment loan terms that students are simply not able to take on. Lumni, a lending organization in Chile, is working to change this.

While the majority of microfinance models provide short-term credit with a two-year turnaround or less, there is a significant need for long-term finance in the marketplace. Long-term loans of 3 to 15 years, for example, are especially critical when borrowers are looking to finance educational expenses or agricultural investments.

The very nature of education is long-term, whereas agriculture can involve both short- and long-term loans. Longer-term agricultural investments include microforestry, organic conversion and field renewal, to name just a few.

Despite the many efforts and programs in the developing world, girls are still largely disadvantaged. In general, they tend to have less access to education and fewer social and economic opportunities than their male counterparts.

One significant indicator of the well-being of adolescent girls is child marriage. While this is an issue that can also effect boys, it's impact on girls is hugely disproportionate.

Reasons for child marriage range from economic to social. In many cases, girls are married off at an early age to reduce the... Continue Reading >>
