This 3-part video interview introduces you to Nat Robinson, CEO of Juhudi Kilimo, a Kiva Field Partner located in Kenya. Learn why so few microfinance institutions (MFIs) are working in the agriculture industry and how Juhudi is leading the way in rural asset financing. Kiva recently went through an internal transition to Google Apps from some other email systems. The experience of moving to Google Appps demonstrated how entrepreneurial Kiva is. It's worth a brief recount and some thanks to those that helped. It also clarified the role of IT in a non-profit for us, which I'll cover.

Moving to Google Apps

The decision process was painless. Kivans were solving problems with Google services on their own that our old mail systems could not. IT was already leaning towards a Google Apps move... Continue Reading >>

Handling around eight thousand loans every month, this team makes an enormous contribution to Kiva. What fuels volunteers’ enthusiasm, and what do we gain from volunteering?

Tracking social performance is a complex issue. In addition to tracking the progress of Kiva borrowers through the profiles and journal updates, Kiva looks at the social performance of our MFI partners to inform who we should be partnering with.

Some of the questions that we ask ourselves are:
• who is the MFI reaching with its services?
• what products does the MFI offer (variety of loans and beyond loans)?
• what are the benefits to the clients?
• how socially responsible is the MFI?

On that last point, a particular area of interest is whether the... Continue Reading >>

Kiva’s Editing and Translation Marathon last Monday was a huge success! 91 volunteers and staff reviewed 756 loans throughout the day. This is a new record by far for most loans reviewed in a day (our previous record was ~900 loans reviewed in a weekend). During last year’s marathon 26 volunteers and staff reviewed 325 loans, so this shows how much our team has grown over the past year.

Kiva is now in great shape as we head into our busiest time of year. Thank you to everyone who participated in or helped with the Editing and...

It's no secret that Kiva's first four years have had unprecedented impact-- over $90 million has been raised from over 550,000 users reaching more than 230,000 entrepreneurs in 49 countries. Countless stories have emerged, new friendships have been forged, and lives have been changed. We're blown away by all the dedicated Field Partners and amazing Kiva Lenders who've made all of this possible.

But we believe this is only the beginning . . .

Kiva is about dreaming big. The entrepreneurs on the website dream about big business;... Continue Reading >>

The third and final day of SOCAP09 was considered the highlight of the three day conference, with participant-led Open Space sessions.  Over 800 attendees were impressed with the SOCAP team as they convened the right people: top practitioners, investors, and entrepreneurs, along with the new, young grass roots start ups and people with ideas who want to make a difference.  They asked us what projects and topics we wanted to speak more about and then invited us to post these hour-long sessions on the wall for attendees to consider.

  • We were able to track down and fix the issue some people were having with their transaction history. What's more, we were able to make it much snappier
  • The entrepreneur profile page has changed. You will notice:

    • We've been able to make the "Advanced View" of the repayment schedule even more...

When we made the change to our new Partner Administration system in November, we also created a longer billing cycle of 45 days. After working with this system for a few months we realized the longer billing cycle was overly complicated for Kiva’s Field Partners, leading to a lot of confusion, missed payments, etc. So we’re shortening the billing cycle to 30 days, which means that partners will now make payments to Kiva on the last day of the month, rather than the 15th of the following month. Shortening the billing cycle helps our Field Partners because making payments for the previous month... Continue Reading >>

I started with Kiva about eight months ago, and as the new IT guy I decided to put in place a new backup and monitoring regime for our users. We decided to go with JungleDisk, and we’re super happy with it. Also, we approached JungleDisk with our cause and they wanted to support us.
