Wow.  We're pretty excited about what's happening with the API thus far. Within a couple of hours of the launch we saw the first use of the API on a blog and in the first week there were four API toolkits for accessing the API in a range of languages. Here's a couple of other things that popped up that caught our eye:

  • a service that lets you sign up for email alerts for your favorite loan categories
  • a map that lets you browse for new loans geographically
  • a Wordpress widget for lenders to showcase their loans
  • this world...

I had some time this weekend and decided to play around with the new Kiva API. Check out the result:http://www.frazao.org/kivacloudThis little toy pulls a random sampling of loans from Kiva. Then it reads through each business description to find the most common words. The more often a word is used, the larger it appears in the cloud. It's an interesting way of looking at the dataset - it turns out Kiva is all about the children!!You can also click on a word to see the loans that mention that word. Personally, my favorite view is the one that shows all words that appear at least 10 times... Continue Reading >>

Rico Munoz is the Partner Development Specialist for Asia, and I managed to catch a quick conversation with him before he left to return to the Philippines tonight. It's always great to have the international staff in the Kiva HQ office, but for now we'll have to rely again on Skype and email to stay in touch! And if you're in San Francisco tonight, don't forget to check out Ripple, the Kiva fundraiser hosted by Philanthro Productions! Over the coming months something I'm going to be working towards is giving the Kiva community better insight into who does what at Kiva, and who the Kiva staff are, via short videos to be posted on the Kiva blog. The last two weeks at Kiva HQ in San Francisco have been "black out" weeks which means that all Kiva staff are required to be working from Kiva HQ in San Francisco, which includes all of our staff located internationally. This ensures that we all get two weeks of face-to-face time, several times a year, to ensure that the organization is running smoothly in unison, despite the... Continue Reading >>

This is build.kiva.org, our brand-spankin'-new destination for developers wanting to build and extend the microlending platform we've created at Kiva. Over the next few months we plan to shape this into a hub for builders, mashers, and other creative types looking to make a difference in the world through loans to the working poor.  Here you'll find news, discussion, and documentation around the Kiva API and other tools we provide to developers. You'll also be able to connect with other Kiva Developers, share your ideas, and keep up with activity going on in the developer community...

Hello!  We're brimming over with excitement here at Kiva Headquarters because today we get to introduce you to the Kiva API.  We've been working hard over the past 4 months, crafting this interface so that anyone with a bit of software savvy can help us create new applications, tools, and features for the Kiva lending community. All you need to get started is a bit of instruction – the Kiva API is completely open and no developer registration is required to use it. The Kiva API begins as a set of RESTful web services, focused primarily on the tasks of...
