Last week, 19 energetic and dedicated Kiva Fellows descended upon our headquarters to train for their placements in the field in the coming months. The trainees were selected from an impressive pool of applicants, and they joined the Kiva Team for four intense days of lots of learning and preparing to represent Kiva in the field and work with our Field Partners all over the world.

You might notice this week that some of the Kiva Field Partner names have changed a little. We're not trying to confuse you, just trying to standardize! In the past, we referred to our partners in a variety of ways, either by their full names, abbreviations, or a combination of both. Now, we've changed names to follow this format: "[Full Partner Name]([Acronym]), a partner of [Network]." Whenever the entire partner name was in a language other than English, we abbreviated the entire name (for example, "Fundacion... Continue Reading >>

We pushed out a release earlier this afternoon (and brought down the site for a little bit – sorry about that!). Briefly, the changes you might notice are:
  • We changed the metrics ticker on the home page a bit so it represents some more information we have
  • The Fellows blog is now on the Kiva site for easier access. Check it out; it has some great stories from the Kiva Fellows about their experiences as they work to help our partner Microfinance Institutions work most effectively with Kiva
  • We've changed the My Portfolio>My Account>Transaction History page to include...

You may have noticed that we changed the donation/"Help us Pay the Rent" screen during the loan checkout process. In particular, we're rotating through different pictures of Kiva Staffers to see which pictures are more likely to inspire people to donate to Kiva so that we can keep on doing what we do. For some people in the organization, it's become a mini-challenge to see who's most "popular." So, we 've been keeping track of the numbers and which pictures inspire more donations and we thought it would be fun to share the results as they stand now:The top 5 are:The picture of the meeting in... Stay tuned and you'll see a special surprise on the Kiva homepage. Some explanation:We looked at some data that showed where people were looking and clicking on the homepage, and we found that not a lot of people pay much attention to the list of entrepreneurs below the fold. What's more is that the main "Featured Entrepreneur" wasn't getting the attention (i.e. number of clicks) that you would guess. Now, that's a shame since the most intriguing information we have on the Kiva site is about the entrepreneurs. And the entrepreneurs do the best job of explaining what Kiva is. So, Jonathan, one... Continue Reading >>

Kiva Fellows from around the world work with Kiva partners to post new businesses to Kiva, post journals, and make Kiva processes as efficient as possible. Along the way, they meet many of the entrepreneurs that Kiva lenders provide funding to and witness the impact of microfinance first-hand.This week on the Kiva Fellows blog, Kiva Fellows Isadora Tang and Dylan Higgins reflect on the impact of microfinance. Isadora is currently working as a Kiva Fellow with CREDIT, one of Kiva's longest partnerships in Cambodia (and a World Relief partner), while Dylan recently completed his fellowship... Last month in April, Kiva and Advanta Bank, one of the nation's largest issuers of credit cards to the small business market, formally announced the launch of the KivaB4B Project with a beautiful party in downtown Philadelphia. KivaB4B is a joint initiative between two unique organizations supporting entrepreneurs and small business owners. The program is simple. Advanta empowers its cardholders (well over one million) to 'double the impact' of their Kiva loans. Anytime a lender uses their Advanta credit card (or the new KivaB4B card) to make a grant, Advanta will match it - dollar for... Continue Reading >>

We're rolling out a release that the Kiva team is very excited about this week, and we hope it will excite you, too. I'll list the highlights:
    • Blended Payments: Lenders can now pay using a combination of their Kiva Credit and a PayPal transaction. In the past, you could only really use one or the other (so if your transaction amount exceeded your Kiva Credit, you couldn't really use your Kiva Credit). That's fixed now. While fixing it, we made some changes to clean up the overall checkout flow.
    • We made some changes to our "Pay the Rent" page during the checkout flow to make it...
