It has been a devastating week for the Philippines. After Typhoon Ondoy (Tropical Storm Ketsana) caused devastating floods earlier this week, the area is now being threatened by Typhoon Parma.Kiva is sharing messages from our Field Partners in the affected areas as we receive them. Just last week Agnes Chu was at the Kiva HQ office in San Francisco, training to become a Kiva Fellow. After graduating from the training program, she prepared to begin her fellowship in Samoa, working with Kiva Fellow South Pacific Business Development (SPBD). Last Monday, we welcomed 49 dynamic individuals to the Kiva office to train them to become our newest Kiva Fellows team! The Kiva Fellows Program recruits, trains and deploys skilled volunteers for three to four month assignments working directly with our Field Partners.By Friday of last week, we had graduated the group as official Kiva Fellows to be deployed to locations all around the globe, including among others Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Palestine, Peru and the Philippines.

Thank you for all the concern expressed by lenders regarding the recent tsunami in Samoa (CNN report here.)We have received the following communication from our Field Partner South Pacific Business Development (SPBD), based in Samoa. We are relieved to learn that no staff have suffered casualties, although many of their clients have been affected.
