One month ago, the Kenya Agency for Development of Enterprise and Technology (KADET) became the first Kiva partner in Kenya to join in over a year. Rocked by the post-election violence of early 2008, KADET and many other microfinance institutions were severely impacted by clashes that disrupted everyday life for an entire nation. In spite of this, KADET continued to serve clients in 53 branches across a nation the size of Texas ensuring that the rural poor maintained access to financial services.Kenya's microfinance sector has continued to feel the effects of the post election violence but... Traveling with a microfinance institution in rural Tanzania, I once spent 45 minutes in an SUV getting to their "closest" rural client. Rural Africa can get pretty sparsely populated making it difficult for loan officers to access clients or for clients to access an MFI office without incurring significant costs. Higher costs make it harder for microfinance institutions to serve the rural poor or drive up interest rates to keep institutions sustainable. What if clients could make payments on loans through their phones? That's what two Kiva partners, Tujijenge in Tanzania and the Small and... Continue Reading >>

Thank you to all those who joined the Community Conference Call today. We had approximately 80 people participating, and heard directly from 16 lenders who shared their thoughts and comments on the call. There were many different thoughts that were shared. In summary, they included:
  • Lenders should choose - Kiva is a conduit from the lenders to borrowers. Kiva should not be forced to choose the level of poverty lenders lend to.
  • The idea that US entrepreneurs cannot benefit from small loans is wrong.
  • Lenders should vote with their dollars, Kiva should not play a...

At Kiva, we have the luxury of having the support of some of the most innovative businesses around the world. One of those businesses, Nau, a supporter of Kiva via their Partners for Change program, is announcing a new initiative - their first annual Grant for Change.
Nau will be giving away a $10,000 grant designed to support individuals who instigate lasting, positive change in their communities. The grant is nomination-based, and voter-driven, which means you get to shape who will win the prize. Maybe this means you nominate yourself, or maybe it means you nominate your...
