Apply to be a Kiva intern by July 5!

June 18, 2013

Looking to begin a career in international development or social enterprise? Join the Kiva team as an intern and gain access to an influential personal and professional network of technology, non-profit, and microfinance professionals!

Interns are essential to Kiva’s operations and its mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. There are a wide range of positions in a variety of departments where interns work closely with staff on high-impact projects in an educational and social work environment. This is no "fetching coffee and making copies" kind of internship!

Weekly brownbag lunches enable interns to hear from all different Kiva departments and get a better understanding of the org's operations. There are also opportunities for coffee breaks with Kiva's CEO and President. You can even improve your public speaking and communication skills with weekly Toastmasters meetings.

Not to mention, Kiva's very social work culture can make you forget you are actually working! Former intern Sam said, “Interning with Kiva was like finding a second family. Though hard working and driven, the Kiva office is also one of the most welcoming environments I have been honored to be a part of.”

The Kiva internship program offers training and workshops to help interns launch careers in a range of fields after they leave. Past Kiva interns have gone on to work for companies such as Fair Trade USA, Salesforce, Google, Patagonia, One Acre Fund, Deloitte, Room to Read, Catapult, and Square on the strength of their Kiva internship experience.

Former intern Chloe said, “After gaining exposure to microfinance through Kiva, I went on to perform evaluations of microfinance institutions for the U.N. in India. I also won a grant from a development competition to start an NGO linking microfinance and malaria-preventing bednets. We are developing a pilot program in Western Africa. Kiva was the BIG initial step to me building an expertise in microfinance and a founding element of my career.”

We are currently looking for volunteer interns who are available to work at our San Francisco headquarters August 2013 to January 2014 for at least 3 days a week, making this opportunity perfect for young professionals.

We target applicants who:

  • Demonstrate a willingness to go above and beyond in their work
  • Show passion for Kiva’s mission
  • Are flexible by nature
  • Can commit to the time frame
  • Are comfortable with administrative responsibility
  • Are looking to make a significant contributions in their time with Kiva.
If this sounds like you, send your cover letter and resume in by July 5th.

“My internship experience at Kiva has been, by far, one of the best things I have ever gone through. I really appreciate the time you to take to build deep relationships with each of the interns and create events to support us in our career paths! It’s a definite advantage to have that I’ve found to be invaluable already.” - Erin, former intern
