Today Kiva was copied on a Letter to the Editor, sent by a Kiva Lender:Dear Editor:I have two investment portfolios. One portfolio holds my investments in American industry. It has declined in value about 25% in the last two months. My other portfolio is with Kiva, a web-based organization that lets me invest directly in microloans to poor people throughout the world. My recent loans to the Cambodian pig farmer, the Azerbaijani clothing seller, the Bolivian cheese maker, the carpenters in Lebanon and Nicaragua, and a dozen others have been repaid in full. The only interest paid by Kiva... Continue Reading >>

We know that many Kiva Lenders have been using Kiva as a teaching tool in the classroom, as a student activity on college campuses, and as a way to give back as guided by their faith. So, last week we added some new pages to share examples of using Kiva in these ways, and to share some materials that others have created and welcome you to use.Just click on our Do More link and you'll now find Kiva in the Classroom, Kiva on Campus and Kiva and Your Faith. These are places where you can learn about ways in which others are using Kiva as an educational tool or group activity in these contexts... Continue Reading >>

One thing we strive towards at Kiva is increased transparency into how microfinance works. Next week, we'll be releasing some changes to how we account for our loans. If you want the really, really detailed version, I encourage you to read this post and the surrounding discussion at KivaFriends. If you just want the high level, though, here are the changes we’ll be making:
  • We will be improving the site on which our Field Partners post fundraising loans to work better under low-connectivity environments. Many of our partners work in environments where the internet isn't super snappy. That...

Team number 301 -- Don and Jims Family and Friends -- is a cool lending team I think. This team was established so that supportive friends and family of Don and Jim could celebrate Don and Jims 25th year together, and now legal union, by making Kiva loans and attributing them to the lending team.Don and Jim, retired and living in Mexico, are devout Kiva lenders. They lend because they have found the people in Mexico to be lovely, honest, and hard-working, and they want to support... Continue Reading >>

This past week, I had the good fortune to meet with BAIK - a microfinance institution located in Bogor, Indonesia that is looking to partner with Kiva (Bogor is located about an hour South of Jakarta by train). BAIK is part of PERAMU, an umbrella organization that founded a microfinance institution (BAIK), a cooperative... Continue Reading >>
