Last Monday, we welcomed 49 dynamic individuals to the Kiva office to train them to become our newest Kiva Fellows team! The Kiva Fellows Program recruits, trains and deploys skilled volunteers for three to four month assignments working directly with our Field Partners.By Friday of last week, we had graduated the group as official Kiva Fellows to be deployed to locations all around the globe, including among others Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Palestine, Peru and the Philippines.

Thank you for all the concern expressed by lenders regarding the recent tsunami in Samoa (CNN report here.)We have received the following communication from our Field Partner South Pacific Business Development (SPBD), based in Samoa. We are relieved to learn that no staff have suffered casualties, although many of their clients have been affected. Kiva is thrilled to welcome a new microfinance partner from Sierra Leone to the website, the Association for Rural Development (ARD). ARD is an indigenous Sierra Leonean microfinance institution registered as an NGO and begun in 1986 as a multi-sectoral NGO. The organization has an outstanding loan portfolio of Le 3,667,545,109 ($1,220,485) as of end-FY2008 and a client base of 12,666 active borrowers. As many of you may be aware, the Philippines experienced severe flooding a few days ago as a result of Typhoon Ondoy. CNN has reported the story here.Kiva has 8 active Field Partners in the Philippines, two of which have headquarters in Manila, which was severely affected by the flooding. These two Field Partners are Center for Community Transformation Credit Cooperative (CCT) and Ahon sa Hirap, Inc. (ASHI). First, my name is Dan and I’m a volunteer at Kiva. Over the past two months, I’ve been helping analyze a number of different things from lender behavior to loan and portfolio information.
