Kiva Fellows 18th Class
Icaro's quest to try to understand issues regarding poverty emanates from his upbringing in Colombia and the constant exposure to inequality and lack of hope. He studied Economics and Politics in the UK and has worked for the UK government looking at agricultural and environmental policy, and has gained experience in the private sector doing economic research on developing economies. This background has served as a basis for realising the importance of empowering local communities and the central role microfinance can play in leading people out of poverty in a sustainable way. Icaro hopes the Kiva fellowship will allow him to gain an insight into the microfinance industry, as well as the challenges faced by people from poorer backgrounds in order to better assess what is the best way he can add value going forward. He will start a master's programme after the fellowship.
